Red candle in christmas tree

A christmas tree blaze: 4 tips for a relaxing holiday

A Christmas tree that has caught fire happens too often during the holiday season, as the numbers show. According to the German Insurance Association (GDV), fires are more common at the end of the year. People should not underestimate the risk. And once a Christmas tree starts to burn, reacting quickly is a must.
As a manufacturer of flame retardants like Disflamoll®, Reofos® and Levagard®, LANXESS is a fire safety expert. This year, we are sharing a few tips on how to safely make it through the holidays.
1. Trust is good, control is better

In Germany, it is not uncommon to light up the tree with real candles. For those who do, it is critical to never leave it unattended. Should a candle tip over due to a weak holder or something else, you have to react immediately. It only takes around 30 seconds for the entire tree to go up in flames. Where you place the candles also counts. Keep them about 15 cm apart and secure each one on the tip of a branch with no other branches directly above the flame.

2. Keep things fresh

Over time, even the loveliest of Christmas trees starts to dry out. The problem: a dry tree is an even greater fire hazard. That’s why it is recommended after purchase to put the stump in a bucket of water and store it outdoors. When you do bring the tree inside, regularly refill the Christmas tree stand with water. Depending on the ambient temperature and humidity, a Christmas tree ‘drinks’ up to half a liter per day.

3. Location, location, location

Whether you use candles or Christmas lights, you can minimize your fire risk by ensuring the tree is stable and not too close to flammable objects like the sofa, drapes and your new designer rug. Once a tree catches fire, it spreads throughout the entire room in just a matter of minutes.

4. Do not try to be a hero

Prevention is key, but what happens if your tree does start to burn? If the fire is small and contained, a pot of water may help. Actually, it is advisable to keep a bucket of water nearby just in case. Should you have to use it, it is important to not dump the entire bucket all at once, but slowly put out the flame. Fire extinguishers and special fire retardant blankets are also good alternatives. Just remember: do not try to be a hero! If you are uncertain what to do, call the fire department immediately.

We wish you a safe and merry Christmas as well as a Happy New Year.
