LANXESS supports the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, 193 countries adopted the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”). The 17 SDGs aim to end poverty, hunger and inequality, take action on climate change and the environment, improve access to health and education as well as build strong institutions and partnerships.
Through these goals, the international community is seeking to foster global economic progress and social justice while recognizing the ecological limits of our planet.

The chemical industry expressly committed itself to sustainable development decades ago, one of the first industry sectors to do so. Since then, awareness of both the necessity to act sustainably in the broader sense and of the opportunities this presents has steadily grown and matured across industry and national borders.

LANXESS is committed to the SDGs. We understand that supporting the SDGs is actually driving our own success as a company in the end. In 2016, against this backdrop, we started to review our current sustainability position and analyze the interlinkage of our activities with the SDGs. Our impact valuation concept shows how our business activities influence the SDGs. The concept of the SDGs has also been part of our product portfolio assessment, where we assess the sustainability performance of our product portfolio from an economic, environmental and social perspective – also against the SDGs. Finally, we reviewed our contribution to the goals by corporate initiatives.

The results show the manifold contributions LANXESS already makes today – and also make equally clear what strategic challenges the chemical industry faces: achieving consistent growth while making responsible use of resources, avoiding harmful emissions into the environment, and ensuring the health and safety of employees and partners.
