Pittsburgh, Pa. – September 18, 2025– Global specialty chemicals company LANXESS will showcase its comprehensive portfolio for lithium-ion battery production at the Battery Show North America, taking place October 7 – 9, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. As LANXESS celebrates its 20th anniversary, the company is reinforcing its role as a resilient global supplier committed to delivering high quality, high-performing, sustainable chemistry solutions that meet the demands of new and evolving industries.

Comprehensive Portfolio for Battery Innovation

Leveraging two decades of specialty chemicals expertise, LANXESS is well positioned to support Western battery supply chains with advanced materials and innovative technologies for lithium-ion battery materials. The company’s portfolio spans the full battery value chain covering four key areas: chemicals for cathode materials, raw materials and components for electrolytes, solutions for performance and safety of battery components, and process chemicals for recycling.

Sustainable Chemicals for Cathode Materials

LANXESS is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of synthetic iron oxides and has developed new Bayoxide® iron oxide battery grades, which serve as customized raw materials for the synthesis of low-cost and sustainable cathode material lithium iron phosphate (LFP). These products are field-proven, specifically engineered for the requirements of LFP manufacturers and enable optimal electrochemical properties for high battery quality, performance and efficiency.

In addition, LANXESS is continuing to expand its product range for cathode active materials. At its production site in Germany, the company is currently building up production capacities for iron phosphate, which will be marketed under the PhosCAM® brand.

LANXESS is thus striving to establish itself as the leading Western supplier on the market with sufficient capacity for the production of iron phosphate battery grades.

“With the U.S. LFP cathode market projected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 14% through 2033, it’s clear that demand for safer, longer-lasting, and cost-effective battery solutions is accelerating,” says Renata Rodrigues, Head of the LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit for the Americas region. “LANXESS is proud to lead the development of sustainable Western LFP supply chains, leveraging decades of chemical expertise and industrial-scale infrastructure to deliver high-quality, environmentally responsible battery materials.”

Solutions for the Electrolyte Supply Chain

LANXESS is also a leading manufacturer of hydrofluoric acid, phosphorus chemicals, thionyl chloride, and fluorosulfonic acid. These are key raw materials for conductive salts such as lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆) and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) – the main ingredients in electrolyte formulations. With its upstream integration into key raw materials, LANXESS supports the development of Western conductive salt producers and secures the supply of key battery components. In addition, the LANXESS subsidiary Saltigo provides custom synthesis of electrolyte additives and tolling of electrolyte formulations.

Solutions for Performance and Safety of Battery Components

As batteries power more devices and vehicles, safety is increasingly vital – especially given the fire risks posed by flammable electrolytes in lithium-ion cells. As a global leader in flame retardants, LANXESS addresses these challenges with a large portfolio of advanced flame retardant technologies that can be used as additives for electrolytes to maintain additional safety within battery cells, while maintaining battery performance. They can also be added to various polymers used for battery modules and housings, high-voltage connectors, and also in charging infrastructure.

Color is also an important safety component– specifically, the signal color orange is standard for high-voltage components in electric vehicles as a safety feature and needs to be recognizable over the entire lifetime of the vehicle. LANXESS’ orange pigment Bayplast® Orange TP LXS 51137 is designed for use in high-voltage and other engineering plastic components for demanding applications like electric vehicles batteries. Its robust properties – high heat stability, excellent weather resistance and color stability under UV exposure and extreme environmental conditions – help ensure plastic parts maintain their safety-critical orange color over many years.

Process Chemicals for Battery Recycling

Lewatit® ion exchange resins from LANXESS play a key role in the extraction, recovery and purification of battery-grade nickel, cobalt, and lithium, and are crucial for the extraction of these battery grade metals from black mass. These resins can support closed-loop recycling and help manufacturers recover valuable materials for reuse in cathode materials.

The company also offers extractants such as Baysolvex® D2EHPA and tributyl phosphate (TBP), which serve as selective extractants for cobalt, nickel, and manganese from black mass leaching solutions. In addition, LANXESS supplies sulfuric acid, an effective leaching agent for recovering metals from black mass, forming the basis for further purification steps.
