Pittsburgh, Pa. – April 23, 2024
– Specialty chemicals company LANXESS will be exhibiting at the NYSCC Suppliers’ Day, North America’s largest tradeshow dedicated to cosmetic product development, taking place in New York City from May 1-2, 2024. At booth #722, the company’s Flavors & Fragrances business unit will present a broad range of products that protect, perform and delight in cosmetics and personal care formulations – while helping customers achieve sustainability targets. The company’s wide range of offerings for cosmetic formulations includes preservatives, multifunctionals, flavors and fragrances, with renewable alternatives for the majority of its portfolio, including the new, climate-friendlier Purox® S Scopeblue® sodium benzoate.

Skin-friendly, eco-friendly, robust preservation

LANXESS offers a broad portfolio of trusted nature-identical preservatives and multifunctionals. As demand for milder and more sustainable products is increasing in the cosmetics and personal care market, multifunctional products are helping formulators address a variety of challenges by reducing conventional ingredients, strengthening the effectiveness of individual ingredients, or even replacing some ingredients completely.

The company’s Purox® B benzoic acid has a minimum purity of 99.98% and its Purox® S sodium benzoate has a minimum purity of 99.9%, making these products among the highest purity offerings for benzoic acid and sodium benzoate available. Its Kalama® sodium benzoate NF/FCC also offers high minimum purity of 99.9%.

Kalama® benzyl alcohol NF/FCC is also produced to a very high minimum purity of 99.9%. Benzyl alcohol is a well-established cosmetic preservative that also functions as a fragrance fixative and solvent. It shows synergies with sodium benzoate that, when used together, enhance preservation robustness. The two ingredients are safe, effective solutions for preserving freshness and maintaining the integrity of personal care formulations. They also meet consumer demand for sustainable and clean label solutions, as they are nature identical, readily biodegradable, and authorized for use under many eco label certifications.

Now available: Highly sustainable sodium benzoate

LANXESS will introduce Purox® S Scopeblue®, the climate-friendly alternative to the conventional nature-identical and readily biodegradable Purox S product. LANXESS uses the Scopeblue brand label to identify its own products with a CO2 footprint at least 50 percent lower than that of conventional products or which consist of at least 50 percent sustainable raw materials. Purox S Scopeblue is produced with green energy and renewable raw materials, according to the ISCC Plus mass balance approach, and as a result, is nearly climate-neutral. As it is chemically identical to standard Purox S, manufacturers do not need to make any formulation changes when converting to the Scopeblue variant. Purox S Scopeblue is an excellent solution for formulators who want to take advantage of the reliable preservative effect of sodium benzoate and reduce the overall product carbon footprint in formulations.

LANXESS also offers more sustainable product alternatives for the majority of its portfolio of preservatives, fragrances and flavors. The company relies on biodegradable products that are either made from natural raw materials or products that enable manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint along the entire value chain. Additionally, the production sites for these products are all certified to the ISCC Plus standard.

High-performance Purolan isoparaffins for challenging SPF formulations

Another spotlight at Suppliers’ Day will be on the company’s high-purity Purolan® isoparaffins. As consumer preference leans away from silicones, many personal care product manufacturers are seeking high-performing alternatives to these traditional materials. LANXESS’ range of Purolan isoparaffins can be suitable alternatives without compromising on performance. The exceptional solubilizing power and high spreadability of Purolan isoparaffins make them excellent options for improving the sensory qualities of sunscreen products that can be inherently challenging to formulate, due to common problems like stickiness and tackiness. Purolan isoparaffins demonstrate improved solubilization of organic UV filters compared to alternatives, which can increase the stability and SPF factor in sunscreen formulations throughout storage.
