Geismar (Rubicon Joint Venture)

At Geismar, LANXESS operates Rubicon LLC, a joint venture between Huntsman and LANXESS. It is home to the largest methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production facility in the Americas region and employs more than 700 associates and contractors annually. The site is located on approximately 81 acres and comprises seven production units. On average, Rubicon produces 440 kilotons of MDI annually. LANXESS wise the site belongs to the Business Unit Lubricant Additives Business (LAB), producing aniline for several business units and diphenylamine (DPA) for LAB.

Aniline is mainly used in the production of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). It also serves as an important intermediate in industries such as dye production, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, rubber and plastic additive production. It is also a starting material for flexible polyurethane foams, rigid polyurethane foams and antioxidants. Flexible polyurethane foams are used in upholstered furniture, mattresses, car seats and shoes, while rigid polyurethane insulations are used in freezers and refrigerators worldwide. The MDI derivative is also used as an industrial adhesive, and aniline serves as a precursor for the production of drugs such as paracetamol.

The derivative diphenylamine (DPA) is produced from aniline and has many applications in various industries. It is a widely used chemical compound and is used as an antioxidant in lubricants, fuels and explosives. In addition, DPA plays a crucial role as an intermediate in dye production, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and rubber and plastic additive industries. DPA derivatives are used as antioxidants in rubber, polyurethanes and plastics to slow down the degradation of these products and increase their durability.
