Preserve natural beauty

Editor: Kerstin Stenger
Back to nature! Pamela Anderson visited recently the Milan Fashion Week without any makeup. "A strong message for women" Scarlett Johansson celebrates her for that in the online magazine "Popsugar".

Natural beauty is not only in vogue for decorative cosmetics. When it comes to the ingredients of cosmetics and body care products, customers are more and more interested on high-quality sustainable ingredients.

The crux of the matter: natural products bring along their own microbes and cosmetic products in particular contain a lot of water, around 60 to 85 percent. This creates a perfect breeding ground for microorganisms. How can producers ensure that their personal care products remain durable and safe for consumers' health?

Keeping products clean and free of bacteria, mold and fungi is only possible with appropriate preservatives. Our sustainable preservative Neolone® BioG Preservative is the solution. Neolone® BioG Preservative is a
natural (1) preservative and is derived from natural ingredients such as sugar beets and corn.

Neolone® BioG Preservative can be used for a wide variety of applications:

  • Skin care: Neolone® BioG Preservative can provide a high level of protection against a wide range of microorganisms in make-up removers, face creams, body milks, sunscreens and hand creams.
  • Hair care: Neolone® BioG Preservative can preserve rinse-off and leave-on hair conditioners as well as 2-in-1 shampoo.
  • Deodorants: Neolone® BioG Preservative can be used as a preservative in deodorant creams and antiperspirants.

We talked to Vivien Konetzky why Neolone® BioG is the preservative of choice

Why do we rely on the sustainable preservative Neolone® BioG Preservative?

In general, the demand for sustainable products has been increasing for years in all areas of life. This also applies to the cosmetics industry. Consumers now care about ingredients in cosmetic products.

Therefore, preservatives that are naturally and sustainably derived are gaining in importance. Neolone® BioG Preservative, which is used in body lotions, shampoos and conditioners, among other things, reliably protects products and meets customers' need for natural, sustainable ingredients.

Which regions are most promising?

This is a global issue, but the pressure is strongest in the EMEA region. Here, there is a strong awareness of sustainable products that should also not cause skin irritation, if possible. Our product meets all these requirements. We therefore see stronger demand in the EMEA region, followed by the North America and Asia regions. Here, manufacturers and customers are deciding even more on the price basis. Sustainable and natural preservatives are usually even more cost-intensive compared to traditional preservatives due to raw materials.

How are sales going?

In the current difficult economic situation, some customers are still relying on traditional chemistry for the time being due to cost. In addition, it takes time to reformulate the products. Manufacturers have to carry out a lot of tests before launching them on the market. That's why we support our customers in their formulation and innovation projects. We help find sustainable solutions that work reliably in the long term.

In addition to Neolone® BioG Preservative, we are also researching sustainable multifunctional products and boosters. Boosters minimize the use of classic or soft preservatives and enable sustainable labeling, such as COSMOS or Nordic Swan. We also see great potential and growing demand for this.

(1) Neolone® BioG Preservative is approved under the COSMOS standard for use in cosmetic and personal care products and complies with the ISO 16128 definition for a naturally derived ingredient.
