LANXESS Introduces Aqucar® A 20:
Advanced Microbial Control for Oil and Gas Applications
- EPA-approved water treatment microbiocide
- 20% Dimethyloxazolidine (DMO) provides long-term, cost-effective protection
- Freeze stable, water- and hydrocarbon-soluble, biodegradable

Pittsburgh, Pa. – April 4, 2024–Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has expanded its offering of microbial control products for the oil and gas industry with Aqucar® A 20, a water treatment microbiocide tailored for long-term preservation of oilfield reservoirs.
Aqucar A 20 is a 20% dilution of Dimethyloxazolidine (DMO), providing an optimized concentration for effective performance. It has been approved by the U.S. EPA for use as an oilfield biocide to control or eliminate the growth of microorganisms in oil and gas production systems.
Native downhole populations and microorganisms introduced during water injection leave wells contaminated with bacteria that survive and thrive in subsurface conditions. Aqucar A 20 microbiocide helps to protect the reservoir by providing sustained microbial control over several months, helping to prevent issues such as biofilm formation, souring and corrosion. It is freeze stable at sub-zero temperatures for use in cold-weather conditions, soluble in both water and hydrocarbons – and it is classified as readily biodegradable.
“LANXESS is continuously working to deliver advanced solutions tailored to the needs of the oil and gas industry,” said James Donovan, Global Head of market segment Energy & Water, LANXESS Material Protection Products business unit. “Our newest product, Aqucar A 20, helps to provide customers with an effective downhole microbial control strategy for weeks to months, as a cost-effective solution.”
Aqucar A 20 joins LANXESS’ comprehensive portfolio of solutions for the oil and gas industry that help to enhance pipeline and asset integrity, reduce microbial induced corrosion, and maintain hydrocarbon quality.
As each application is different and requires a tailored program to meet specific needs, LANXESS assists customers with microbial control issues based on the conditions of each phase, considering temperature, salinity, compatibility and the desired duration of control.
