Nagardo® natural beverage protection earns registration in Canada

  • Approved for use as a preservative in beverages by Health Canada
  • Highly effective, natural alternative to conventional preservatives
  • Proven technology from LANXESS first launched in the U.S.

Beverage manufacturers can now produce naturally-preserved beverages for the Canadian market with Nagardo natural beverage protection from specialty chemicals company LANXESS. The innovative natural microbial control agent for beverages has been evaluated and approved as a preservative for use in non-alcoholic beverages by the Canadian department for national health policy, Health Canada.

First launched in the U.S. in 2019 where it has a growing customer base, LANXESS continued Nagardo’s global rollout in Australia and New Zealand in 2021. The registration in Canada now expands the opportunities for beverage innovations in the North America region, while European regulatory approval also in progress.

Nagardo natural beverage protection is derived from the edible mushroom Sweet Osmanthus Ear (bot. Dacryopinax spathularia) that was discovered in the rainforest of French Guyana. In a screening of more than 100,000 natural substances, the natural glycolipids that comprise Nagardo natural beverage protection have shown to be the most powerful with regard to antimicrobial performance necessary for the protection of beverages.

“Tackling food and beverage waste is not only a crucial objective of the sustainable development goal set by the UN, it is also our business’ mission enabled by our strong portfolio of beverage protection products,” says Monika Ebener, Global Marketing Director Natural Antimicrobials in the Beverage Technology Business Line at LANXESS. “For beverage manufacturers looking to participate in the trend towards “better for you” options, protecting the beverage quality without synthetic preservatives on the one side has meant consuming a lot of energy in hot-filling processes or chilled chain logistics on the other side. Nagardo natural beverage protection offers the missing piece, as it enables fully natural beverages with the necessary shelf life and intended sensory profile.”

Nagardo natural glycolipids are very effective at maintaining the quality of a beverage by protecting it from spoilage. The product shows strong efficacy against a broad range of beverage-spoiling organisms such as yeasts, molds and bacteria. Additionally, Nagardo can eliminate organisms that have adapted to commonly-used preservatives without impacting the sensory profile of the beverage. It can be used in a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks such as carbonated soft drinks, juices, teas and many more.
