LANXESS' Nagardo, the natural beverage protection, obtains registration for use in Colombia and Peru

Lima (Peru) / Bogota (Colombia), May 3, 2023 - Beverage manufacturers in Colombia and Peru can now preserve beverages naturally thanks to Nagardo®, a product developed by LANXESS. The innovative natural microbial control agent for beverages was evaluated and approved as a preservative for use in non-alcoholic beverages by the consumer authorities in Colombia (Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos or INVIMA) and Peru (Dirección General de Salud Ambiental e Inocuidad Alimentaria or DIGESA).

The protection offered by Nagardo® is based on the edible fungus Sweet Osmanthus Ear (bot. Dacryopinax spathularia) discovered in French Guiana and bright orange in color. In an evaluation of more than 100,000 natural substances, the glycolipids that make up Nagardo® proved to be the most potent in the antimicrobial performance required for beverage protection.

Nagardo's natural glycolipids are very effective in maintaining the quality of a beverage by protecting it from spoilage. The product shows high efficacy against a wide range of beverage spoilage organisms such as yeasts, molds and bacteria. In addition, Nagardo® can eliminate organisms adapted to commonly used preservatives without affecting the sensory profile of the beverage. It can be used in a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages such as carbonated soft drinks, juices, teas, isotonic beverages and many more.

 

Natural protection for beverages

"Addressing food and beverage waste is a crucial goal of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations and is also the mission of our Beverage Protection Products business," said LANXESS' Global Marketing Manager for Natural Antimicrobials in the Material Protection Products (MPP) unit, Monika Ebener.

"Soft drink manufacturers looking to be part of the trend for healthier options without synthetic preservatives have consumed a lot of energy in hot-fill processes or cold chain logistics. Nagardo® natural beverage protection offers the missing piece, enabling all-natural beverages with the necessary shelf life and desired sensory profile," added Ebener.

First launched in the United States in 2019, LANXESS continued the global expansion of Nagardo® into Australia and New Zealand in 2021. Registration in Colombia and Peru now expands opportunities for beverage innovations in (South) America, while regulatory approval has already been achieved in the European Union and Canada. Further down the road, global approval for use will be achieved.
