Nagda Site
The LANXESS India Nagda site is located around 125 kms away from Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The operations in Nagda are a part of the Flavors & Fragrances business unit of LANXESS. The products manufactured at this site are supplied to the domestic market and exported to countries around the world, for a wide range of end applications like agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, dyestuff, fragrances, paints and coatings among others.
The site in Nagda, spanning more than 20 hectares, has consistently delivered outstanding results with a constant focus on quality and customer satisfaction. LANXESS is significantly investing in the site on sustainability projects, process improvements and further expansions.
The site has been setting new standards of sustainability in the Indian chemical industry. It has adopted various world class practices. For example, the site is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified and follows innovative practices like Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Total Quality Management (TQM) and energy saving ‘Kaizen’.
Besides the production facilities, the site boasts of utility services like:
- Cogeneration plant fuelled by biomass, saves around 120,000 tons of CO2 emissions every year
- Effluent treatment plant
- Sewage treatment plant
- Waste water post treatment plant
- Off-gas incinerator
- Occupational health centre
LANXESS has also carried out several corporate social responsibility projects in the area of education and for protection of the environment in the region.
COGENERATION PLANT
LANXESS raises the bar for sustainable development in Nagda
With the start of its new co-generation plant, LANXESS is able to meet most of its energy demand at its Nagda site. The cogeneration plant, which is fuelled by the biomass fuel - soya husk, meets virtually most of the power requirements of the Advanced Industrial Intermediates (AII) plant of LANXESS at the site.
With an investment of EUR seven million in the pioneering plant, LANXESS has clearly raised the bar for sustainable development in India. By utilizing a renewable source of energy, LANXESS has significantly reduced its carbon footprint by 70,000 metric tons of coal per year and thus reduced about 120,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. In comparison, the combustion of biomass as a fuel is carbon neutral for the environment.
This plant is another example of LANXESS’ commitment to green chemistry and sustainable development. The German specialty chemicals company is using innovative and climate-friendly technologies at its manufacturing sites worldwide and has reduced its direct greenhouse gas emissions by more then 50 percent globally. From 2007 to 2009, annual emissions from the group’s plants were cut from 3.5 million to 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents.
SUSTAINABILITY
Co-generation plant
Nagda site has a co-generation plant which is fuelled by biomass. By utilizing a renewable source of energy (soya or mustard husk), LANXESS has significantly reduced its carbon footprint by 70,000 metric tons of coal per year and thus reduced annual CO2 emissions by about 120,000 tons. The combustion of biomass as a fuel is carbon neutral for the environment. This co-generation plant, being the largest consumer of Biomass in the region, benefits farmers financially. Besides, the Nagda site also owns seven wind turbines in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra which generate approximately 700 MWh of electricity every year. This energy is returned to the grid. Notably, the site is registered for availing the benefit of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) by the government of Madhya Pradesh from May 2013.
Waste water treatment at Nagda site
The LANXESS site at Nagda has a full-fledged sewage treatment plant and waste water treatment plant.
Sewage treatment plant - This full-fledged sewage treatment plant is the first-of-its-kind in Madhya Pradesh, which treats and recycles domestic sewage water from the site as well as the nearby colonies. This initiative was also awarded by Indian Chemical Council in 2009 for its innovative approach to recycle and harness domestic sewage water for industrial use. The site utilizes treated sewage water for make-up water of cooling towers and has a reverse osmosis plant to further process the sewage water for use as boiler feed water. The site also efficiently recycles steam condensate.
Waste water post treatment plant - Taking another step towards sustainability, the waste water post treatment plant was commissioned at the site. This plant treats the discharge from the existing Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) in a manner that virtually no liquid effluent is discharged from the site. The water recovered from the waste water post treatment plant can be used for the production processes. This initiative not only prevents contamination of the river Chambal, which is primary source of water for the villagers downstream but also significantly reduces dependence on conventional water sources. It is indeed a remarkable step towards sustainability and sets a standard for the Indian chemical industry.
Offgas Incinerator
The twin-chamber incinerator has been constructed using the most modern technology and is commissioned for safe disposal of distillation residue generated from plant production processes. Steam is generated using the heat recovered from flue gas, which is in turn used for production processes. It has been designed with dual scrubbing systems for recovering HCl from flue gas. It complies with all requirements laid down by Central Pollution Control Board and the Madhya Pradesh Control Board.
Comprehensive air pollution control equipment is installed and responsible disposal of waste is undertaken at this site.
Other health and safety initiatives
- A full-fledged occupational and health centre equipped with all necessary medical facilities and manned 24*7 by experienced medical officers, capable of mitigating emergencies
- Pollution control devices and leak detectors installed for early detection and to prevent adverse effects on employees‘ health
- Closed plants and processes reucing possibility of exposure
WASTE WATER POST TREATMENT PLANT
A new benchmark in sustainable development
The new ‘Waste water post treatment plant’ will treat the discharge from the existing Effluents Treatment Plant (ETP) in a manner that virtually no liquid effluents are discharged from the site. More importantly, the treated water recovered can be used for the production processes and even as boiler feed, which will bridge the gap in availability of water during the summer months.
LANXESS’ Nagda site has a full fledged effluent treatment plant (ETP) and a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant which treats sewage water from the colonies around and renders it fit for use in the production processes. After a reverse osmosis step, this water is then used as boiler feed water. Taking another initiative towards sustainability, LANXESS decided to study whether there is a possibility to recycle the entire treated waste water.
The development of the waste water treatment process involved several surveys on water composition from different sources as well as additional measures to pre-condition the waste water for the treatment concept. This included trials and pilot runs and subsequently, the company zeroed in on a concept for the waste water post treatment that involves a reverse osmosis process followed by an evaporation step.
This plant has been built with state-of-the-art technology using advanced materials and world class equipment, in co-operation with some of the best known names in the industry.
This implementation of this project has created a new benchmark in the area of environmental protection, and is an example of LANXESS’ ongoing commitment towards sustainable development.
The major products are Benzyl Chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzaldehyde, Benzotrichloride, Benzyl Acetate, Cinnamic Aldehyde, Sodium Benzoate, Benzyl Benzoate, Thionyl Chloride, Sulphuryl Chloride and Sulphur dichloride.

Tree plantation on World Environment Day
June 2014: LANXESS employees from Nagda site performed a Nukkad Natak (street play) based on the theme ‘Raise your voice, not the sea level’. This play was carried out at four strategic locations in and around Nagda in order to create awareness about environment protection. To further strengthen the message, around 300 saplings were distributed to the audience during the play, at different locations.
At the site, around 500 trees were planted on this occasion. LANXESS has so far planted 7500 trees at the Nagda site in the last few years.
