Iron oxide Pigment 303
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
The quality advantages of our Bayferrox® and Colortherm® brand iron oxides include outstanding color stability, excellent lightfastness, outstanding weather resistance, and high thermal stability. Since these pigments are practically insoluble in water, they are also migration-resistant.
LANXESS is a leading manufacturer of synthetically produced inorganic color pigments. Under the Bayferrox®, Colortherm®, and Bayoxide® brands, we offer various iron oxides that differ in their chemical composition, crystal structure, morphology, and color. The most important types are:
- Iron(III) oxide (α-Fe₂O₃ and γ-Fe₂O₃): Forms the basis for lightfast, weather-stable red shades.
- Iron oxide hydroxide (α-FeO(OH) and γ-FeO(OH)): Forms basis for brilliant, lightfast yellow pigments.
- Iron(II,III) oxide (Fe₃O₄): Used for deep black shades.
- Mixed oxides: Combinations of the above oxides produce a wide variety of brown shades.
Natural iron oxide pigments are derived from natural ores and often contain impurities. As a result, their color quality and composition are not always consistent, and the hues often appear less intense. Furthermore, their availability depends on natural deposits.
Synthetic iron oxide pigments, on the other hand, are manufactured industrially, giving them a very high purity and consistent quality. Their particle size and composition can be precisely controlled, resulting in uniform, vibrant, and exactly reproducible shades.
Yes, Bayferrox and Colortherm brand iron oxide pigments have a proven low carbon footprint, as verified by Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). You can find more information here.
