LANXESS launches highly effective disinfectant for the medical sector

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS is launching Rely+On Medero, a new disinfectant for the medical sector. It is highly effective against bacteria, bacterial spores—including Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile)—viruses, yeasts, and mycobacteria such as tuberculosis. Even against difficult biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus it works reliably within a few minutes.
No resistance development
The chemistry of the disinfectant is based on the active oxygen Potassium monopersulfate (Oxone) and on active chlorine generated in-situ. It does not induce acquired resistance, not even in MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) or VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci). This is a decisive advantage compared to active ingredients such as quaternary ammonium compounds, or aldehydes.
Disinfection of surfaces and non-invasive medical devices
The disinfectant is suitable for equipment classed as non-invasive medical devices and for hard surfaces and other types of surfaces in medical practices and hospitals, including wards and intensive care units, operating theatres, and isolation rooms.
The product is available as a powder, and is readily dissolved in water for use. It retains its full spectrum of efficacy from the time the solution is prepared until the end of its shelf life.
Approval as a disinfectant for medical devices
Rely+On Medero is approved as a disinfectant for medical devices and is therefore classified as a Class IIa device under the European Union’s Medical Device Regulation. For non-medical hard surface disinfection Rely+On Medero will be registered under Biocidal Products Regulation Product Type II.
Easy to use and dose
The product is low-odor during use, especially compared to other formulations based on hypochlorite, also known as bleach. Without the typical, pungent disinfectant odor, it can also be used in occupied patient areas. The disinfectant is compatible with materials such as stainless steel, polyethylene, and polycarbonate, making it suitable for use on medical devices and surfaces.
LANXESS offers Rely+On Medero in different packaging sizes: The single-dose format in 20- or 40-gram sachets allows the product to be dosed easily and is supported by a clear dosing table. The product is also available in 1 kilo or 5 kilo units.
Distribution in Europe, Asia, and South America
LANXESS aims to start distributing Rely+On Medero in many countries globally.
The product rounds out the Rely+On product line, which includes Rely+On Virkon for routine disinfection and Rely+On PeraSafe for high level disinfecting temperature-sensitive devices such as endoscopes.
