Fine Chemical Manufacturing in Germany
As a wholly owned subsidiary of LANXESS, Saltigo has operated as an independent company since 2006. Around 1,100 employees work at our production sites in Leverkusen and Dormagen, Germany – located within one of Europe’s largest integrated chemical parks (CHEMPARK).
This Germany-based production network enables reliable, scalable and secure manufacturing of fine chemicals for global customers.
With extensive expertise in complex multi-step synthesis, process development and industrial scale-up, Saltigo supports customers throughout the entire product lifecycle.
In addition to custom manufacturing of fine chemicals and intermediates, Saltigo offers a selected portfolio of fine chemical intermediates as well as the globally established insect repellent active ingredient Saltidin® (Icaridin).

Saltigo Management Insight
Process innovation and optimization are core elements of Saltigo’s custom manufacturing and process development approach. This focus on process innovation enables Saltigo to scale complex chemical processes efficiently and bring them to reliable industrial production.
Michael Schäfer was born in Leverkusen 1974. He studied Chemical Engineering at the Technical University (RWTH) of Aachen, Germany and at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. In 2000, Schäfer began his career at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, where he became Senior Project Manager.
In 2007, he transferred to the group function Corporate Development (GF DEV) at LANXESS. As Vice President, he ran the strategic development of five business units in the segment Performance Chemicals until 2009. Subsequently, he was appointed Head of the newly created business line Biocides within the business unit Material Protection Products. From May 2013 to January 2024, he headed the Material Protection Products business unit.
On February 1, 2024, Michael Schäfer took over the management of the Saltigo business unit within LANXESS.
