Clear Strategy to Lower Emissions
We are taking a three-pronged approach to achieve our target:
1. Process Excellence
LANXESS is driven by technological innovation to achieve its climate targets. By integrating advanced systems—such as high-efficiency heat recovery in thermal oxidation furnaces and the replacement of conventional machinery with energy-optimized motors—the company significantly reduces its industrial carbon footprint. These technical overhauls, ranging from improved plant insulation to the large-scale implementation of defossilized production methods, ensure that operational growth remains decoupled from energy consumption while maintaining a competitive edge through resource efficiency.
2. Sustainable Steam Supply
LANXESS is transforming its steam supply, a cornerstone of its energy profile, by transitioning from fossil fuels to low-emission alternatives. Through close collaboration with suppliers and the integration of new technologies—such as industrial heat pumps, vapor-compression evaporation, and electric boilers—the company aims to eliminate steam-related emissions entirely by 2040. By prioritizing waste heat recovery and the electrification of steam production, LANXESS plans to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 85,000 metric tons by 2030, ensuring a transition that balances ecological necessity with long-term cost competitiveness.
3. Clean Electricity
LANXESS is decarbonizing its energy supply by transitioning from fossil fuels to low-emission sources, a move critical for addressing 75% of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Through a "make-and-buy" strategy, the company is securing long-term green power agreements—such as 100% hydroelectric energy for German sites—while expanding its own renewable facilities in India and Brazil. By increasing the share of low-emission electricity to 22% in 2025 and targeting a total phase-out of purchased electricity emissions by 2040, LANXESS ensures its shift toward electrified production processes remains both ecologically sustainable and economically competitive.
“Net Zero Value Chain” program: Clear Strategy to Lower Indirect Emissions
In 2022, LANXESS also developed a clear strategy to lower indirect emissions and launched the Net Zero Value Chain program. This aims to make the entire LANXESS supply chain climate-neutral. The indirect emissions in the upstream and downstream supply chain (Scope 3) are to be eliminated by 2050. The “Net Zero Value Chain” initiative is based on three pillars:
- Transition of raw materials purchasing to increasingly sustainable raw materials that are bio-based, originate from a recycling process or are produced with renewable energy.
- Greater consideration of carbon footprint when selecting means of transport.
- Expansion of our range of climate-neutral products and solutions with a low carbon footprint.
