With its proven heat transfer medium Diphyl, Lanxess is helping to convert solar radiation into electrical energy in an economical and environmentally friendly way. In the “Arenales” parabolic trough power plant near the town of Morón de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain, solar radiation is focused by parabolic mirrors onto an absorber pipe in which around 2,200 tons of Diphyl circulate as a heat transfer fluid. The heated medium is used to generate steam via a heat exchanger, which then generates electricity via a steam turbine - just like in a conventional power plant. A thermal salt storage system enables electricity to be generated even after sunset - almost around the clock in the summer months. Arenales was launched at the end of 2013 after a two-year construction period with a capacity of 50 MW and supplies around 50,000 Spanish households with environmentally friendly electricity.
