LANXESS provides  precursor materials  for two LFP production process that make greater use of regionally available, FEOC-compliant raw materials and comply with advanced sustainability standards within the EU and USA.

Option 1: In this process, iron oxide, phosphorus and lithium compounds are converted to LFP. The process has already been established on a smaller scale and our Bayoxide® iron oxide battery grades are successfully used in practice.

Option 2: LANXESS will soon be supplying high-quality products for a production process in which iron phosphate and lithium compounds are converted into LFP. LANXESS is planning to synthesize its iron phosphate battery grades directly from iron and phosphoric acid which is more sustainable than using iron sulfate as raw material

Improving LFP Battery Materials for Europe

LANXESS and battery materials manufacturer IBU-tec advanced materials have entered into a research cooperation in the battery sector. The goal of the two German companies is to develop innovative iron oxides for the production of cathode material for LFP batteries and thus increase the performance of this battery type.

Recycling for the circular economy

LANXESS is involved in the development of recycling concepts for the recovery of large quantities of old LFP batteries. To this end, there is a project with partners that is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and is aimed at recycling LFP cathode materials. Chemical processes are being developed to recover lithium, iron and phosphorus, among other things, from the "black mass" produced during battery recycling by shredding.
