African Swine Fever

Advanced Biosecurity Program

What is African Swine Fever?
African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease that exclusively affects pigs. It is caused by the African swine fever virus, which is resilient and can survive in various environments. ASF spreads easily through direct contact with infected pigs, wild boar, contaminated feed, pork products, and equipment. The virus can also persist in uncooked pork and swill.

What are the effects?
African Swine Fever has severe effects on pig producers. Infected animals often die suddenly, leading to rapid and massive stock losses. Producers face severe financial setbacks due to animal losses and business disruptions. Outbreaks typically result in strict movement controls, culling, and trade bans, further impacting farm income and operations.

How can it be prevented?
Effective prevention of African Swine Fever depends on strict biosecurity practices. Comprehensive cleaning and disinfection of vehicles are essential, as vehicles can easily carry the virus. The use of disinfectant sprays at farm entrances and the implementation of controlled entry systems, such as showers or Danish entry, are recommended. Additional measures include external vehicle washes and remote pig collection.
