Newcastle Disease

Advanced Biosecurity Program

What is the Newcastle Disease?
Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious disease of poultry, primarily caused by a virus that leads to severe illness and high death rates, especially in chickens and turkeys. The infection spreads quickly within and between flocks, mainly through direct contact with infected birds. Additionally, indirect transmission occurs via contaminated people, equipment, vehicles, and feed.

What are the effects?
Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious threat to poultry producers, causing rapid illness and high mortality in flocks. Outbreaks result in immediate financial losses and major disruptions to production, forcing urgent action, lost productivity, and increased spending on control measures. These impacts can severely affect both short-term operations and long-term profitability.

How can it be prevented?
Effective prevention of Newcastle Disease entails implementing strict biosecurity measures, including thorough cleaning and disinfection, tight control of farm access, and diligent management of wild birds and vermin. These practices are essential to minimize the risk of disease introduction and transmission within poultry operations.
