Porcine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrome

Advanced Biosecurity Program

What is Porcine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrom?
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is a serious viral disease affecting pigs, marked by significant reproductive issues and respiratory distress that lead to high illness and death rates in herds. Caused by the PRRS virus, it spreads rapidly both directly from sow to offspring and between pigs, as well as indirectly through contaminated equipment, vehicles, personnel, and even airborne transmission.

What are the effects?
PRRS causes significant economic strain for pig producers by increasing herd morbidity and mortality, leading to lower productivity and higher piglet losses.

How can it be prevented?
Preventing PRRS in pig production requires rigorous biosecurity protocols, including meticulous cleaning and disinfection of vehicles, facilities, and equipment, strict control of animal and personnel movements, and minimizing exposure to potential carriers such as wild boars. Consistent application of these measures, reinforced by ongoing staff training, is critical to reducing the risk of disease introduction and spread.
