REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union (EU) regulation governing nearly all chemicals

Scope & Applicability

Applies to all parties in the chemical supply chain, including producers, processors, traders, and end users
Covers both individual substances and mixtures, regardless of their hazardous properties

Key Regulatory Aspects

Registration: Requires detailed documentation and safety data for chemical substances
Evaluation: Assesses risks and compliance with safety standards
Authorization: Controls the use of substances of very high concern (SVHC)
Restriction: Limits or bans certain chemicals through delegated legal acts

Chemical products are in general only affected by REACH if they release substances, contain chemicals of very high concern respectively are substances regulated by delegated legal acts.

The regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), is considered a particularly strict and comprehensive set of regulations governing chemicals, striving to contribute to protecting both human health and the environment. They determine in particular the possible risks that could arise from handling a chemical substance and provide information allowing for its safe use. Companies register their chemical substances with the competent authority, ECHA, following a predetermined procedure. ECHA in turn cooperates with other EU bodies and EU member state authorities. Among other things, ECHA´s scientific committees evaluate whether the risks inherent in certain substances are controllable.
