LANXESS celebrates World Environment Day 2023 with Solar Energy Projects around the World

Once again, the sun is shining very brightly in Mexico today. When Pedro Bojacá, former Country Manager of LANXESS Mexico, visits the Hogar y Futuro children's home in Mexico City, he is delighted not only by the radiant sunshine, but most of all by the beaming faces of the children. The children's smiles are the greatest reward for his work. His commitment to the home has paid off: since 2017, he and his colleagues have ensured the energy-efficient conversion of the building. From laying new electrical wiring to equipping it with modern lighting and installing a modern photovoltaic system on the roof of the building, the children's home now draws 100% of its energy from the sun.

50 years of World Environment Day

The history of World Environment Day begins in 1972 in Stockholm at the first international conference on environmental protection. The meeting marked the start of an annually recurring anniversary that focuses on climate protection issues and global solutions for a better environment. People and companies from more than 150 countries now take part every year. The United Nations is the patron of the event.

India, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, Spain: LANXESS promotes climate protection with modern technology and solar energy

For LANXESS, climate and environmental protection is an issue that is not just honored once a year with campaigns. Every day, the company sets ambitious goals for the conservation of our natural resources and develops modern, environmentally friendly technologies for energy generation. LANXESS supports projects around the world that live up to this claim.

Sunlight for green energy: LANXESS supports sustainability projects worldwide with solar energy

LANXESS is pursuing the ambitious goal of being completely climate-neutral by 2040. From 2004 to today, LANXESS has already achieved a reduction of more than two-thirds of its emissions and saved several million tons of greenhouse gases. By supporting solar energy projects in India, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and Singapore and saving 33,000 metric tons of CO2 per year to date at its German and Belgian sites, LANXESS is continuing on the path toward climate neutrality and also supporting the communities around its sites in the process. The goal is to source the electricity supply of all LANXESS sites worldwide predominantly from renewable energies by the year 2040 too.

Home and future for Mexico's children

The children's home "Hogar y Futuro" - the name translates as "Home and Future" - has been providing a home for abandoned, orphaned or endangered children up to the age of six since 1993. The non-profit organization also cares for around 300 preschool children in the community. The result of LANXESS's support: the care facility saves a large part of its energy costs and can put the much-needed money into the children's care and schooling. The energy used for this is now climate-neutral and sustainable. This not only makes the children at Hogar y Futuro shine, but also the environment.

Arenales power plant, Andalusia, Spain: full steam ahead to environmentally friendly electricity for 50,000 households

With Diphyl ® - a heat-resistant and durable heat transfer medium - LANXESS is achieving one of the United Nations' global Sustainable Development Goals ("SGDs"): To ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and timely energy for all. The product is used in solar thermal power plants, for example in Andalusia, Spain. The technology is simple and cost-effective: parabolic mirrors focus sunlight onto a tube in which around 2,200 tons of Diphyl ® circulate. This produces steam which, through a turbine, generates environmentally friendly electricity for around 50,000 households.

Jhagadia and Nagda, India: Solar energy on the roof and in the streets

LANXESS has financed solar roofs at four schools in Jhagadia with a five-figure sum from October 2022 to February 2023. This will benefit around 1,800 schoolchildren, students and teachers, as well as the city's administration: Inexpensive, environmentally friendly energy not only helps the climate, but also the community's educational mission. This is also the case in Nadga: Solar energy supplies several schools with electricity - and on top of that, the streets in the community are also illuminated with solar street lamps.

Porto Feliz, Brazil: Installation of a photovoltaic system for a home for disabled people

Robert Madersdorfer, General Manager at the LANXESS site in Porto Feliz, is highly satisfied. Thanks to the LANXESS initiative, the non-profit organization "Apae" is now using a sustainable photovoltaic energy system to reduce energy costs. This gives the entire association greater financial freedom for important tasks in the long run. "Creating value gives me the feeling that I have fulfilled my task," says Madersdorfer, who was instrumental in driving the project forward.

Facts and figures: This is how LANXESS supports locally with solar technology

LANXESS's initiative not only benefits the climate and the environment, but also people and institutions around the world in a very specific way:

  • Financing and support for eleven projects in Brazil, India and Mexico in the last five years alone
  • 309,465 direct beneficiaries
