We were the first to develop and patent Calcium Sulfonate Complex technology in 1980s. Over the last 35+ years, we continued to develop and produce calcium sulfonate complex greases. Today our portfolio has 300+ different formulations for various industries such as Steel, Mining, Construction, Paper, Automotive, Food, Power generation and Railroad. We offer greases based on oils ranged from Group I - Group V, and in various NLGI grades (00, 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5)
We make greases thickened with CSC from optimized combinations of raw materials and processing conditions. We are back integrated into the production of overbased calcium sulfonate and control its composition. During production, the ingredients react and arrange to form micelles. Each microscopic micelle has a core that contains stacks of calcite calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals and a stable oil-soluble shell. The calcite crystals serve as barriers to water to improve corrosion resistance and control the release of oil under applied shear stress. No other grease thickener has this unique structure and combination of outstanding tolerance to heat, water and high loads.

Calcium sulfonate complex grease is exceptionally shear stable even in the presence of water and heat. Shear stability is critical to ensure that the grease remains at or near its original consistency throughout its life time in an application. Through its excellent shear stability, calcium sulfonate complex grease remains in the application and provides excellent film strength, protecting the parts from damage.
LANXESS calcium sulfonate complex grease typically loses less than 1% in the ASTM D1264 water washout test at 79°C. This keeps consumption low and is particularly critical in food processing plants where frequent wash downs (cleaning) is needed as it limits the amount of grease that comes into contact with food.
While most other thickener types rely upon added antiwear agents/ additives to provide protection against wear, the exceptional antiwear properties of our calcium sulfonate technology come directly from the calcite form of calcium carbonate found within the thickener structure. 4-ball wear scars of less than 0.5 mm are typical for our G-2000 greases, which helps to extend component life.
Mechanical stability or shear stability is the ability of a grease to resist changes in consistency from continued mechanical shearing in the field.

The calcite calcium carbonate along with the calcium sulfonate soap, found within our G-2000 greases, provide exceptional corrosion resistance in the presence of fresh, salt and even many process waters. Calcium sulfonate complex grease performs well in all bearing corrosion tests and, in the B117 salt fog test, significantly outperforms competitive technologies.
Like the anti-wear properties, our calcium sulfonate complex grease’s exceptional extreme pressure properties come directly from the calcite calcium carbonate found within the thickener structure. 4-ball EP weld loads of 400 kg or greater are typical.
